Noroxin, which is manufactured and marketed by Merck, was approved
by the FDA for sale on October 31, 1986. The drug does not have any
therapeutic equivalent. Merck is allowed to market the drug in the
US by its brand name. Noroxin was approved by the FDA after a lot of
clinical trials. It was formerly available only as a prescription
drug in the US.
Norfloxacin, a generic version of Noroxin, which is manufactured and
marketed by NovoPharm Limited, was given FDA approval on April 26,
2000. NovoPharm is allowed to market the drug by its generic form.
Previously, Norfloxacin was available only as a prescription drug.
Now, it is available over the counter.
The FDA approved norfloxacin after a lot of clinical trials. The FDA
gave approval only after it was satisfied that the adverse reactions
of the drug were mild and not likely to cause any permanent harm to
the health and well-being of people who took norfloxacin. The FDA
gave approval to both Merck and NovoPharm for the manufacture and
sale of norfloxacin in the tablet form which has to be taken orally.
The pills were not manufactured in any other form like chewable
tablets or syrup.
Some other pharmaceutical companies are waiting for approval from
the FDA to become manufacturers and then sell the generic version of
norfloxacin. These companies are expected to get approval from the
very near future. When approval is given to these companies,
norfloxacin would become available more easily than it is now.
